Production Control Improvements

The Production Control team is at the centre of most businesses.

Their function is to coordinate and orchestrate the on time delivery of products / projects / services whilst making a profit and helping to achieve the business plan.

When this function becomes overwhelmed through arrears and increased order volume their activity often moves from the proactive planning and scheduling functions into a reactive expediting function.

Thankfully changing this situation around doesn’t need to be difficult or long winded. Making some adjustments to the processes that the team operates, the daily disciplines required, and perhaps a small change to the way that function is viewed can make a huge difference.

At the core of many businesses is a management system such as an ERP or MRP / MRP II system. If you relate to any of the above points then the following pointers may help your business:
  • Keep your system data clean and useable. If you don’t trust the information then you won’t use it to make decisions. This is where workarounds and other bad working habits often stem from.
  • Learn how the various modules of your business system work. Many problems appear when one function of a business does not understand the consequences of their actions in their own part of the business (system).
  • Help coordinate the other functions of the business by finding ways to share information efficiently between the teams. Use of a short daily meeting can be put to great effect in this instance.
  • Determine what the effective planning / scheduling horizons are for your business and how you need to manage and regulate capacity. Correctly doing this will help to drive up both on time delivery performance and productivity.
  • Try to use ‘exception reporting’ whenever possible. Instead of trying to manage every single detail all the time, work out the key features of your business and then find ways to filter your business data to give you the right information. In many cases the use of a report writer and your MRP / ERP data will accomplish this.
At Smartspeed we help Production Control teams to adjust and improve their methods of working so that on time delivery and improved productivity and profitability can be achieved.
