In many businesses people run around like headless chickens
trying to get everything done. Despite working extremely hard they don't get the
results they need. As the country comes out of recession and work picks up,
this situation will get worse unless we introduce more disciplined ways of
working into our businesses.
Everyone knows how important routines are for babies and
small children and it seems that we could learn a thing or two from our mum's
by applying the same ideas to our businesses.
Some people dislike routines, claiming that they are boring
and rigid. Whilst this can be true,
introducing the right routines can bring enormous benefits to your business.
When we operate in a disciplined way the little (but
important) things in our businesses don't get missed. This prevents unnecessary
'fire-fighting' and helps to eliminate
the chaos from our days to day activities.
Having clearly defined routines means that everyone knows
what is expected of them. It also helps us feel more in control during busy
periods when things are hectic.
Once we have established the right routines for our
business, we can hone them so that they take up only a tiny fraction of our
working day and we don't even have to think about them. This frees up our minds
to think about how we can win more work and come up with better ways of working.
So, when your mum always insisted you had a bath, cleaned
your teeth and went to bed at 7pm - she was right!
